This blog is the 3rd article in a series of GATE preparation tips blog articles for Civil Engineering Students. The blog author, Rohit Sachdeva has secured AIR 93 in GATE 2017 and is currently studying at IISc Bangalore. You can read the rest of the articles under the CE section for GATE blogs at http://gate.vidyalankar.org/category/civil-engineering/.

Continuing with our series of blogs, we will now talk about textbooks for GATE Civil Engineering.

First, if you have joined any coaching for preparation of GATE, your main goal should be to follow class notes thoroughly. I also recommend that you study reference material provided (theory, practice modules, question banks, etc) and practice numerical questions from them. This it-self will help you score very high in the GATE exam and your dependence on textbooks will be reduced.

Even if you are preparing by self-study, my suggestion would be to buy the study material of a good coaching institute and study from them. You can also obtain their study material for practicing numericals. Since notes have filtered information, they will give direction and focus to your GATE preparation.

No doubt that textbooks provide a great pool of knowledge & contain a lot of information and numericals; but, you have to be very careful to not waste a lot of time studying unnecessary topics which are not covered in GATE exam. However, if you have some doubts, or if you are giving yourself a lot of time for preparation (10-12 months), and you solely want to rely on textbooks, the following books are considered very good, which you can follow thoroughly.

Topic Textbook(s)
SOM RK Bansal*, Timoshenko & Gere

* Apart from providing best conceptual knowledge, these books are also very good for practicing numericals. You should definitely try & solve different variety of problems from them.

We will discuss other relevant subject-wise details in the upcoming blogs. Keep reading!
